A demo build: Stone Mill Books
A full site design for a fictional Princess Street bookstore, built to show what's possible rather than tell you about it.
Stone Mill Books doesn't exist. There's no real shop on Princess Street behind it, no real readings calendar, no real phone number. It's a demo build: a complete design system, built the way I'd build a real Kingston independent's site, so you can see the actual craft instead of taking my word for it.

Why it is built this way
A stranger arrives on a phone with one question: are you open, and do you have the kind of books I want? So the first screen carries the shop name as the main signal, one plain headline, one line about the place, and a clear way to check hours or this week's readings. The phone number sits in the header for the people who would rather call.
What each design decision solves
- Hours under the hero. Open days and holiday notes sit early, so a visitor checking whether they can come today gets the answer without digging.
- Shelves as collections, not a product grid. New, used, local history, poetry and children's each get a clear lane — the way a real independent is organized when you walk in.
- Readings as a list with date and host. Events answer "what's on this month" without a third-party calendar widget.
- Find a book as a plain ask. Title, author or ISBN — the question an independent hears most — without a fake catalogue behind it.
- FAQ in collapsible panels. Special orders, holds, gift cards and accessibility are readable before a phone call, without a wall of text.
- Contact with a real downtown address pattern. Princess Street, Kingston, Ontario — the geography a local prospect recognizes, even though the shop itself is invented.
What is invented here
Everything about Stone Mill Books is made up, including its hours, phone number, event titles and shelf notes. They show how each section reads. None of it describes a real business or a real customer.
Real client sites will replace this over time. Until they do, this is the honest way to show the work: clearly labelled as a demo, not dressed up as a testimonial.
