Working with Napanee and Gananoque businesses from outside the city

How the work actually gets done when your business is half an hour down the road, and what's genuinely different about marketing in a smaller town.

Where I am matters less than you would think

I build websites for businesses in Napanee, Gananoque, Amherstview, and the towns in between, and I don't live in any of them. The reasonable question is whether you get a lesser version of the service for that.

You don't, and the reason is unglamorous. Almost none of this work happens in a room together. We talk on the phone, I send you things to look at, you tell me what's wrong with them, and when it helps I share my screen so you can watch me change something while you say yes or no. That's the same process for a client across town as for one on the far side of the county. The part that would genuinely benefit from being in the room, understanding your business and what your customers ask you all day, happens in conversation, and conversation travels fine.

What matters more than where I sit is the same time zone, a phone that gets answered, and the local homework done properly before I ever pitch you anything. That's worth more than a postal code on an invoice.

What is actually different about a smaller town

The search behaviour changes, and it changes in a useful direction.

In a city, people search by category. They type the trade and the city and pick from a list of strangers. In a smaller town, the phone book is a paperback instead of a brick, and people search by name far more often. They already know who does the thing, they're looking for the number, the hours, or a reason to trust that you still do the work you did five years ago.

That makes your site's job different. In Kingston a site is often competing to be discovered. In Napanee or Gananoque it's more often confirming what somebody already half knows, which means the priorities shift. Your name, your hours, your phone number, and clear evidence you're open and active all carry more weight than anything else you could put on the page.

The other difference is the service area. Smaller-town businesses usually serve a radius rather than a town, and the radius is worth naming in plain words on the page. If you're in Napanee and you happily drive to the next couple of towns over, say it. People search the name of their own town before anything else, and a page that never mentions it can't answer them.

How I handle it

There is a page here for each of the towns I work in most, including Napanee and Gananoque, and they cover the local specifics rather than repeating this page.

The pricing is the same everywhere.

SizePriceHow you pay
Starter$1,800One fee, paid once
Grow$3,200One fee, paid once
Complete$5,500One fee, paid once

I don't charge a travel premium and I don't quote a Kingston business differently than a Napanee one, because the work is the work.

If search is the bigger part of your problem, that lives on my sister site at kingstonseo.com, and I'll point you there rather than selling you a website that was never the thing holding you back.

Tell me about your business and the towns you actually serve, and I'll tell you honestly which size fits and what your site needs to do to be found in a town where everybody half knows you already.
